The Justice Department has filed a request to a federal judge, urging the segregation of ballots in Alaska’s Senate race that rank candidate Dan J. Sullivan. This move comes amid ongoing investigations regarding potential voter confusion associated with his candidacy. The court document, submitted ahead of a critical deadline, emphasizes the necessity of these precautionary measures, arguing that they would be unattainable after Election Day.

Associate Attorney General Stanley Woodward stated that it is essential to “preserve and segregate all ballots ranking Daniel J. Sullivan for the purposes of investigating whether such ranking was the product of voter confusion.” However, the filing lacks a clear process for how this review would be conducted or how it might illuminate voter confusion issues.

Alaska employs a ranked choice voting system, and the Senate race features four candidates, including Dan J. Sullivan and Democrat Mary Peltola, whose campaign has been under scrutiny for allegedly recruiting a candidate who shares a name with the incumbent senator. Peltola has denied any involvement in Sullivan’s campaign.

As the Trump administration intensifies its involvement in the Alaska election, the implications of this legal maneuver could have significant repercussions for the outcome of the race. The unfolding situation highlights the complex intersection of law, politics, and electoral integrity in the lead-up to the election.
