In a harrowing incident at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, educator Cassidy Schutz has emerged as a courageous figure after confronting a teenage shooter. In a statement released on Friday, she shared her profound grief, saying, “The pain of this loss I will carry with me forever.”
During the attack on October 15, which tragically resulted in four fatalities—including three young boys aged 5, 8, and 11, as well as a teacher—Schutz bravely threw her cellphone at the shooter and engaged in a physical struggle over the gun. The school district identified her as the staff member who intervened during the traumatic event.
“There are no words to describe the depth of sadness I am feeling following the events of October 15th,” Schutz expressed, emphasizing the reality of the tragedy rather than framing it as a mere story. “This is a horrific and heartbreaking tragedy, and it is our real lives,” she added in her statement.
The assailant, a 16-year-old, was ultimately confronted by a community member who entered the school and fatally shot him during the altercation. Schutz recalled how quickly everything transpired, stating, “It all happened so fast, and I wish with everything in me that we had more time.”
As the community mourns, Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz acknowledged the potential for further tragedy had it not been for Schutz’s brave actions, which “almost certainly helped prevent more bloodshed.” The shooting’s investigation is ongoing, with authorities yet to publicly disclose a motive.
Schutz concluded her heartfelt statement with thoughts for the victims and their families, expressing her solidarity with those affected by the tragic event. “My heart is with you,” she said, while requesting privacy as she navigates her own grief.
