The Golden State Valkyries have made history by clinching their first WNBA championship in just their second season. The decisive Game 7 against the Atlanta Dream concluded with a 68-63 victory, marking a milestone for the franchise.
Star forward Gabby Williams led the Valkyries with an impressive 30 points during the game, earning her the Finals MVP title for her remarkable performance. Williams rallied in the second half, scoring 15 points in the third quarter and 13 in the fourth, overcoming a slow start where she only managed two points in the first half.
As confetti rained down on the court, jubilant fans celebrated the franchise’s inaugural championship. Williams reflected on the moment, crediting head coach Natalie Nakase for her guidance throughout the season. “I love moments like this,” said Williams. “Nat told me to be patient in the first half. It was hard, but I listened to her.” Nakase, a two-time champion herself, has now secured her first title as a coach.
The Valkyries had a challenging path to the championship, initially falling behind in the series after the Dream won two consecutive games. However, Nakase’s strategic adjustments, including a shortened rotation and lineup changes, proved effective as the Valkyries bounced back to win the series 4-2.
Golden State’s victory is not only a sporting achievement but also a significant business milestone. The franchise, which shares ownership with the NBA’s Golden State Warriors, was valued at $1 billion earlier this year, making it the first WNBA team to reach that milestone. The Valkyries have also led the league in attendance, with every home game at their Chase Center being sold out.
With a championship trophy now in hand, the excitement surrounding the Golden State Valkyries is set to grow as they aim for a repeat title in the upcoming 2027 season.
