Michael Mann, the acclaimed director known for films like “Heat,” was involved in an accidental gun discharge at a shooting range in Los Angeles this past weekend. The 83-year-old filmmaker suffered a minor injury but has since been treated and is reported to be in stable condition.

According to a representative, Mann was practicing target shooting when the incident occurred, resulting in a superficial injury. “On Saturday, at a gun range, a weapon accidentally discharged while holstered resulting in a superficial injury to film director Michael Mann,” the statement read. He was promptly taken to a local hospital for treatment.

The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed that officers responded to a call regarding shots fired and determined that the incident was accidental. Mann’s representative reassured that he is recovering well after the event.

Best known for his gripping crime dramas, including the iconic “Heat,” Mann has been a seasoned target shooter for several decades. His dedication to authenticity in filmmaking is notable; he previously shared that the sounds of real gunfire were integral to the atmosphere in “Heat,” where full-load blanks were used to achieve that realism.

In recent news, Mann is also working on a sequel to “Heat,” based on his 2022 novel, “Heat 2,” co-written with Meg Gardiner, which continues the story from his original film.
