In a tragic turn of events, 24-year-old Rachel Apa passed away during her inaugural marathon, the New York City Marathon, over the weekend. Her father, Steve Apa, shared the heartbreaking details with NBC News, revealing that she succumbed to rhabdomyolysis, a rare muscle disorder, after collapsing near mile marker 24.

Rachel was nearing the end of the race when she experienced a medical emergency. Emergency responders rushed her to Mount Sinai Hospital, but despite their efforts, she was declared dead shortly thereafter. According to Steve, the family had been tracking Rachel’s progress through a marathon app, and upon noticing her location had stopped moving, they grew concerned.

On the day of the marathon, Rachel was filled with excitement, texting her father updates throughout the race. Her initial messages expressed enthusiasm as she reached different checkpoints. However, as the race progressed, her texts became concerning. At one point, she texted “Ow, ow,” prompting her father’s reminders to pace herself.

Despite her athletic background as a former Division I field hockey player, Rachel’s collapse highlights the serious risks associated with extreme endurance events. The New York Road Runners reported that bystanders attempted CPR before medical staff arrived, and they utilized a defibrillator in a desperate attempt to save her.

Doctors attributed her death to rhabdomyolysis, a condition that can result from excessive physical exertion, leading to muscle breakdown and subsequent complications. Rachel, who recently relocated to Charleston, South Carolina, for her MBA, was running in honor of her grandfather who battled Parkinson’s disease. Steve reflected on Rachel’s vibrant spirit, noting her dedication to an active lifestyle and her commitment to honoring her grandfather’s legacy.

As her family processes this devastating loss, they remember Rachel as a spirited individual who was always on the go, embodying a life full of energy and passion. Her story serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers associated with competitive sports, even for the most prepared athletes.
