In a surprising announcement, former President Donald Trump stated that the U.S. will end its annual $4 billion aid to Israel by the end of this year. This declaration came during a phone interview with “Fox and Friends,” where Trump claimed to have reached an agreement with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regarding the cessation of U.S. financial support.

Trump’s comments were made as voters were heading to the polls for the midterm elections, a time when U.S. aid to Israel and the ongoing conflict in Gaza have become hot-button issues. He asserted that Israel is “fine with it” and suggested that the country has reached a level of success that diminishes its need for U.S. assistance.

“We’ll help Israel if they need it. You know they’ve been a great ally,” Trump remarked, adding that the idea to halt the aid originated from Netanyahu, who he claimed suggested it would be appropriate to stop receiving financial support.

In response to Trump’s comments, oil prices saw a notable decline, falling more than 3% to approximately $101 per barrel. This drop is viewed by analysts as an indication that the war involving Iran may be winding down, potentially alleviating geopolitical tensions.

Critics of Trump’s announcement have pointed out the potential implications for Israel’s security. Yair Golan, leader of the left-wing Democrats party in Israel, emphasized that the cessation of American aid could severely impact Israel’s defense capabilities and quality of life amid a prolonged conflict.

As the political landscape evolves with the midterm elections, Trump’s remarks and their implications for U.S.-Israel relations will likely continue to be a focal point of discussion.
