In a bold attempt to reshape their narrative on gun rights, Democratic candidates are stepping up their game in the lead-up to the midterm elections. With a focus on appealing to rural voters, these candidates are leveraging their own personal experiences with firearms to connect with constituents.

Mitchell Berman, a Democratic hopeful from Wisconsin’s 1st District, is making headlines with ads that emphasize his identity as a gun owner and hunter. One advertisement features him fishing while holstering a handgun, showcasing his commitment to outdoor activities and safety. “That’s who I am,” he stated, emphasizing the necessity of carrying a sidearm for protection against wildlife in his northern Wisconsin district.

Polling indicates that Berman’s race against Republican incumbent Bryan Steil, who previously won by a 10-point margin, is now much closer than anticipated, suggesting that Democrats may have a shot at flipping this traditionally red district.

Meanwhile, in Texas’ 15th District, Bobby Pulido, a Tejano singer turned congressional candidate, is not shy about his love for guns. He has shared videos of his shooting prowess and decorated his home with hunting trophies. “In rural areas, firearms are a way of life,” Pulido noted, highlighting the cultural significance of gun ownership in his community.

Despite the challenges of running in a district that has leaned Republican in recent elections, Pulido is banking on shifting sentiment among Latino voters and economic concerns to bolster his campaign against Republican Rep. Monica De La Cruz.

The strategies of candidates like Berman and Pulido illustrate a significant shift within the Democratic Party, as they seek to redefine their stance on gun rights in a way that resonates with voters in conservative regions.

As the midterms approach, the stakes are high not only for these candidates but also for the broader implications of their campaigns on the party’s future direction regarding gun control and rights.
