In a surprising turn of events in Michigan’s Senate race, Rep. Haley Stevens, a Democrat, publicly endorsed Republican candidate Mike Rogers on Sunday. This endorsement marks a significant shift as the state approaches a pivotal election that could determine Senate control.
Stevens’ decision comes after a contentious dispute with Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed, who requested that she refrain from participating in his campaign events. In a video announcement, Stevens acknowledged the conflict, stating, “Hey, Michigan, as you may have seen, our Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate, Abdul, said that I was no longer welcome in his campaign and that I should stay away.” She further expressed her support for Rogers, declaring, “And he’s right, and that’s why I am endorsing Mike Rogers for the United States Senate today.”
Just days prior to this endorsement, Stevens had indicated her intention to back the Democratic ticket, including El-Sayed, on Election Day. Her recent appearance alongside Rogers at a church service in Detroit, confirmed by his spokesperson, has sparked backlash among El-Sayed’s supporters, who are now scrambling to address Stevens’ criticisms of their candidate.
Rogers’ campaign welcomed the endorsement, with spokesperson Abby Ronson stating, “Mike welcomes her.” As the election date nears, this unexpected alliance highlights the fractured dynamics within Michigan’s political landscape.
In the wake of this endorsement, El-Sayed’s supporters have expressed outrage, emphasizing the timing of Stevens’ announcement and its potential impact on the upcoming election.
